Hydrogen "Fuel" From Water...
The development of hydrogen for automobile usage is not a new concept. You can find many units being produced today that are the "first generation" of electrolyzer's for aiding in increased fuel efficiency.
The future of hydrogen based transport is inevitable and the gasoline dependant vehicles of today will become obsolete.
Many of these vehicles are forecasted to be in some limited production within the next ten to twenty years. Putting in the infrastructure to support this is another issue as well. What is Hydrogen?
Hydrogen gas (H2) is a gas at normal temperatures and pressures, which presents greater transportation and storage hurdles than exist for liquid fuels. Storage systems being developed include compressed hydrogen, liquid hydrogen, and chemical bonding between hydrogen and a storage material (for example, metal hydrides).
While no transportation distribution system currently exists, for hydrogen transportation use, the ability to create the fuel from a variety of resources and its clean-operating properties make it a desirable alternative fuel.
How is Hydrogen Made?
When two hydrogen atoms bond with an oxygen atom, they form water, H2O. One way to produce hydrogen is to use energy to break water apart, through a process called electrolysis. In this process, electricity and a catalyst are used to separate the hydrogen from the oxygen in the water. The electrical energy can come from any electricity production sources including renewable fuels. Hydrogen released from water by electrolysis can be captured and used as fuel for a fuel cell. After it is collected, it is either compressed into a high-pressure gas, or cooled into a liquid and pumped into the vehicle?s fuel tank for use on-board the car or bus. What happens to the oxygen? It can either be captured or released into the air.
